The Elements of Autumn

Fire of autumn paints the trees
present in absence, the morning freeze
time for the rut of moose and deer
time for a party, harvest cheer

Air of autumn, cool wind blowing
carrying cry of nature's sowing
time for flight of duck and loon
time to let go, howl at the moon

Water of autumn, mist in the morn
on wings of frost winter is borne
time of deep water for eel and fish
time for libation and secret wish

Earth of autumn, harvest of all
cooling down now, far from Sol
time of rest for beaver and bear
time to embrace; tell someone you care

Written for performance by Scott Webster on the occasion of the autumnal equinox of 1989 at New Avalon, Upper Woodlands, New Brunswick, Canada.
